ABOUT KIDNEY HEALTH AUSTRALIA
Kidney Health Australia, a national non-profit charitable organisation, was founded in 1968. Today our mission is to promote good kidney health through education, advocacy, research and support. We share with patients the vision of 'saving and improving the lives of all Australians affected by kidney disease'.
Compared to other diseases in the community, there is little awareness about chronic kidney disease that currently affects an estimated 1.7 million Australians. Kidney disease has no warning signs, meaning that up to 90% of kidney function can be lost without individuals experiencing any symptoms. For this reason, kidney disease is often referred to as the 'silent killer'. Once lost, kidney function cannot be regained- leading to the necessity of a patient to undergo regular dialysis, up to 5 hours a day, several times a week.
Kidney Health Australia seeks to give long-term commitment and support to families and children affected by kidney disease. We have also committed to reaching out to the estimated 1.4 million Australians who are unaware they have early kidney damage. Physical activity and a healthy lifestyle are just a few ways to help in the fight against kidney disease. Help us raise awareness for a disease that affects so many by participating in the Big Red Kidney Walk this September!
